Biography
Known for his bright personality and diverse musicality presented through live performances, compositions, and multi instrument playing, Gyan is one to watch in the UK and World music scene.
Born and raised in the Southside of Glasgow, Gyan’s musical journey started from the age of 11 years old having just graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
He was given his first saxophone just before his 15th birthday, this was due to being told saxophone lessons were available in his high school. The opportunity gave him a chance to explore a ‘new’ instrument not knowing that it would take his musicianship to the next level by pursuing a career in music being accepted to the Jazz course at age 16, starting his studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland by the age of 17.
His parents always had instruments lying around the house. They ranged from a basic piano to exotic Indian instruments like Tabla and Harmonium. Coming from an Indian/Sikh background, he was exposed to a diverse range of music that influences the musician he is today.
As a youth, he was uncertain on what career path to take as he wasn’t very academic, but always had music lurking in the background. He would do small performances of pop tunes he learnt at home by himself in his primary school assembly. This gave him that extra bit of encouragement, also eliminating the fear factor of live performances in front of a large audience from a young age.
Coming up to the age of 13 he started playing an Indian instrument called the Dhol. From this, he went on a voyage to begin playing the Bagpipes as he seen Dhol and Bagpipes were a good combination together. He wanted that unique aspect of a Scottish Sikh wearing a kilt and playing the Bagpipes. This introduced him into Traditional Scottish music. It was a great crossover and gave him a new blend of cultures to fuse together.
Gyan started performing to big crowds by the age of 14. His ambition and leadership skills were executed well on numerous stages from 2014 which include events at Commonwealth Games, BBC main stage, Glasgow 02 Mela, Aberdeen Youth Festival, . From. this, he was gaining knowledge on how to perform and interact with crowds. At this time, his introduction to jazz wasn’t even in sight with addition to not even knowing that he would pursue a career in music. He then began to get bookings for weddings and other various events.
